The Madman's Daughter - Megan Shepherd

Synopsis: In the darkest places, even love is deadly.
Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.
Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.
Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect. (From Goodreads)

I loved every second of this incredible story. For reasons unknown, the second I had it in my hands I knew it was a drop-everything-and-read kind of book. I just found myself immediately swept up into this Victorian gothic horror story that was simultaneously beautiful and terrifying. I was fascinated, enthralled, and more than once my pulse sped up. I closed this book feeling like I had just lived through Juliet's experience, her world, her fears, the characters in her life had all danced in front of me. Not only did it paint an amazing picture, but it triggered my imagination and gave me room for my own visions of what it looked like when the story unfolded.

Everything I love about gothic and Victorian literature was executed so perfectly in this novel. Juliet travels a long way from living in poverty and cleaning hospitals in London to a remote island to find her long-lost father. Each point in the story, each secret unveiled, raises the stakes and it becomes much more than a book than can easily fall into any category. It really stands out to me as unique.

Juliet is the perfect gothic heroine. She's torn between her sense of propriety and staying true to her strong, willful-self. She's been put through the ringer - her family has faced scandal, she's lived in poverty as an orphan, and then she braves a sketchy ship to live on a remote island. Yet she manages to maintain grace and the fierce fire within her. She's also struggling to identify who she is outside of society's view of her and whether or not she's like her father. The way she rationalizes all the ways she is like him, yet is completely horrified by him at the same time is so fascinating. This also sets up an interesting relationship with Montgomery, who believes he has no choice but to follow in Juliet's father's footsteps. I love their relationship, but if any couple is built on moral shades of gray - this one is.

The characters are brilliant, but the way in which this world is sculpted is absolutely breathtaking. It's dark and you can almost see it playing out in front of you in tones of sepia and black. It has that vintage feel to it, yet it's so vivid. Even the island with the jungle, created so outside of society is still governed by it's rules in a way that makes it impossible to forget just where and when this is taking place. The animals turned human are so well detailed, the screams they make when they're operated on are so loud, and the way they are humanized by Montgomery is so tender they just become a vital piece of this world.

The Madman's Daughter is an exceptional debut by Megan Shepherd. It's everything a novel should be, incuding something I feel like I haven't read before, even despite the fact that it's inspired by another book. I'm so grateful this is the first in a series, because I'm not willing to let go yet.

Guest Post:
Greetings mortals,

This week, I thought it wise to begin showcasing the dangerous characters Mab has working for her. It is well known that she often harbors criminals, murderers, outlaws, and other unsavory sorts.

But I fear that until you understand the full weight of this, you still might be swayed to vote for her court.
In essence, she is using convicts to create an unfair market on the sustenance my court so desperately requires. I will let  you draw the parallels. Today I will give you all my court knows of her star magician, Kingston.

Name: Kingston ???
Age: ???
Race: Caucasian ???
Traits: Serves as Magician under Queen Mab. Proclivity towards fire and shirtlessness. Not to be trusted under any circumstance.
Crime: Witchcraft and Murder
Judgement: As decreed in the Oracle Proclamation, all mortal magic-users are direct threats to the safety and sanctity of the Faerie Courts. They are not to be suffered under any circumstance.
Suggested Penalty: Death
Actual Penalty (under Mab's misrule): Stardom

As you can see, Mab has serious undermined the safety of the Courts, not only in her Dream Trade, but with those who run the operation. I highly recommend you reconsider your votes. Do not be swayed by her illusion of lushness and safety.

Sincerely,

About the Book
Publisher: 47 North
Publication Date: December 4, 2012
Format: Kindle eBook

Murdered contortionists aren't exactly what Vivienne signed up for when she ran away to join the circus. But like most things under the big top, nothing is what it seems. With a past she can't quite remember, Vivienne finds that running away forever might not be as appealing as it once sounded - especially not when she realizes the devilishly attractive ringleader Mab is the Faerie Queen of legend...and that she and the rest of the troupe are locked in an age-old rivalry between the otherworldly courts.

Aided by her friends Kingston - a feisty stage magician whose magic is quickly stealing her heart - and his smart-ass assistant Melody, Vivienne finds herself racing against the clock to discover the culprit behind a series of deaths that should be impossible. However, the answer she seeks might reveal more about her own bloody past - and future - than she bargains for.

Finale - Becca Fitzpatrick

Synopsis: Nora and Patch thought their troubles were behind them. Hank is gone and they should be able to put his ugly vendetta to rest. But in Hank's absence, Nora has become the unwitting head of the Nephilim and must finish what Hank began. Which ultimately means destroying the fallen angels - destroying Patch.
Nora will never let that happen, so she and Patch make a plan: lead everyone to believe they have broken up, and work the system from the inside. Nora will convince the Nephilim that they are making a mistake in fighting the fallen angels, and Patch will find out everything he can from the opposing side. They will end this war before it can even begin.
But the best-laid plans often go awry. Nora is put through the paces in her new role and finds herself drawn to an addictive power she never anticipated
As the battle lines are drawn, Nora and Patch must confront the differences that have always been between them and either choose to ignore them or let them destroy the love they have always fought for. (From Goodreads)

It was a little bittersweet saying goodbye to this series. Here was my relationship with it - Hush, Hush: Heyyyyy, Patch. Crescendo: Meh. Silence: I've come this far, might as well read it. OH MY GOSH WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW? THIS IS SO AWESOME. Finale: Should have stopped at book three.

So, yeah, Finale let me down a little bit. After Silence blew my mind, I was expecting so much more from Finale. But it was a lot more of the same. Patch is still calling the shots, despite Nora's protestations. She's still weak (relatively) even though a lot of the book is about her training. But book four was supposed to be about WAR, and it was still about the preparation for war. Kind of anticlimatic.

However, I still am in love with these characters, and it's hard to complain about getting to spend a little more time with them. I thoroughly enjoyed Vee's stepped-up role in this book. She's still one of the best book besties ever. And Patch is still super swoony and still has a bit of a mysterious edge, which keeps him interesting.

So even though it lets me down, I still love this series. Mostly, I'm just going to miss Patch. *sigh*

Sea of Tranquility - Katja Millay

Synopsis: Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her—her identity, her spirit, her will to live—pay.
Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to. (From Goodreads)

Two people can be broken and use each other to mask everything that's wrong. Or two people can be broken in such a way that they find the fit to their jagged pieces in another human being and somehow when they come together, those breaks begin to heal. That's what this story is about. It's healing, growing up, moving on - but it's mostly about how caring for someone else, knowing someone else cares about you can make your life infinitely better.

This story felt so raw, it was easy to let the covers of the book fall away and be hanging out in Josh's garage with Nastya. Despite the volume of horrors in Nastya and Josh's past, no part of this book felt overdramatic. Actually, it was understated, making everything feel like a normal, everday occurence. Because of this tone, it takes a little bit to get into Nastya's world. She lets you in piece by piece, almost like as she begins to trust and open up to Josh, she's trusting you - the reader - too.

There are so many little quirks to this book, like Nastya's crazy running or her consumption of sugar, that make this book stand apart from the rest. Because its through these quirks we get to know the characters and to feel like we're being let into a place where we truly understand another human being. Which is kind of a great feeling - to feel like you know someone inside and out.

Nastya and Josh have a great, breathing and fluxuating relationship. But it takes so much more than Josh to heal her. She makes friends and they make her a little better. Her friendship with Drew is one of the best parts about this book. Even so, the story isn't wrapped up with a shiny bow at the end. It's almost like, between Josh and Drew, Nastya reaches a place where she can accept help in putting herself back together. It's a process that will probably take her entire life, so thankfully she doesn't just get over it because she met a boy.

This is an amazing story that slowly sucks you in and makes you a part of its world. It's full of characters that you wish you could look up and make sure they're still doing okay. It's a slow, kind of painful love that I feel for this book and looking back on reading it already makes me feel nostalgic for some reason.

The Fault in Our Stars - John Green

Synopsis: Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.
Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault. Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind. (From Goodreads)

I know, I'm about a year late with this one. I had it on pre-order since September 2011 and somehow wound up with 3 copies once it was released. I was so looking forward to it. But then it showed up and I didn't feel prepared. I've read all of John Green's novels and I was vaguely aware of the premise of this story and I knew it would affect me greatly. This is the kind of novel that you need to have time to mull over, to absorb, to really think about because it quite possibly contains the secrets of the universe. Plus, I knew it was going to be emotionally intense.

So it took me almost a year to pick up. I still wasn't prepared, but I refused to let it be 2013 without having read this book. And now I'm like - well, I've read it, although I may have already blocked out some of the harder parts about reading this book. I cried so hard I couldn't see the page. It broke my heart over and over again. Although, it's also quite hilarious. I'd be laughing while sobbing and then I'd feel like a horrible person for laughing while the characters are hurting and then I'd wind up sucked into some kind of emotional hurricane. But all of these things are completely worth it.

Because somewhere, I'm sure, the secrets to all you wish to know can be found in these pages. Somehow this story is so much greater than we'll ever know, because everything in this story is lager than life. You just feel like a better, more understanding human being after reading John Green's books, and The Fault in our Stars is no different.

John Green is probably the most quoatable human being alive. There are such beautiful quotes that can be found plastered all over Tumblr. The quotes are relevant out of context, but so much more meaningful once you understand where they are coming from. There was one quote that I hadn't seen before I read the book that struck me while I was reading:
"The world went on, as it does, without my full participation, and I only woke up from the reverie when someone said my name."
There's just something about this. We go on with our lives, but we are really only grounded and fully present when we are tethered to other people. Other people make us truly alive.

My Review of Episode Three:
Ok. I'd really like to know where Vivienne came from. Now, please. It didn't seem so important before, and she mentioned that her past was hazy. I kind of figured she'd had a traumatic incident and was blocking it out or she was forgetting soemthing on purpose. But NOW. Now, she seems to be forgetting something pretty important. And I can't figure out what it is. Which is driving me crazy.

I'm heading towards gushing territory with Kingston. I hate snakes, but I adore his familiar. Also he's more vulnerable in this episode. He's actually a pretty sweet dude. I'm not entirely sure why he is, or even if he really is, attracted to Vivenne at this point. I'm hoping that's something that will become clear soon.

And the plot thickens in this episode because now everyone is suspicious of Vivienne. And since she was doing some things that looked pretty shady, I'm not surprised. I would definitely be pointing my finger at her if I was in this circus. Not to mention, it seems like she has secrets so huge that she isn't even allowed to know what they are.

And thanks for the cliffhanger, Mr. Kahler. Thanks, a lot. Each week it's getting harder and harder to wait for more of the story.

 ------------------------------------------------------------
Teaser:

Kingston smiles, but his voice is serious. "...if necessary, I can...download, if you will, things into your memory. Make you know how to do things you couldn't do before."
"You what?" I ask.
"It sounds bad," he says. "But I don't use it if I don't have to, and even then, I only use it if the person asks. And even then, only if Mab allows it, and writes it into the contract. But she almost never allows cutting corners."
"So you could make me think anything you wanted."
...
"Don't fool yourself, Vivienne," he whispers, almost to himself. "I might have the magic, but the others...they'll get into your head way before me."

The show's just beginning.
