Where the Stars Still Shine Blog Tour: Interview with Trish Doller

I'm so happy to share my interview with Trish Doller, author of the newly released Where the Stars Still Shine. I could go on about how amazing this writer is, but we'll just move right on to the interview. And if you'd like to know my thoughts on her incredible sophomore novel, you can read my review here.
--------------------------------------
In the Best Worlds: Since you write for teens, what were you like as a teenager?

Trish Doller: I was a boring teenager. Seriously. I was trying to figure out who I was so I dabbled in sports, band, art, etc. but never really felt like I was good enough at any of them. My grades were decent, but not stellar, and I was definitely not a troublemaker. Pretty average, really.

ItBW: Congrats on the release of your second novel! What has been your favorite moment in your writing career so far?

TD: I think one of the highlights was the blurb from Melina Marchetta for Where the Stars Still Shine. She is one of my writing role models, so to have her say something nice about my book was a dream come true!

ItBW: Callie is totally different from Travis, but I think it’s safe to say both have won over your readers’ hearts. What do you think would happen if Callie and Travis were to meet?

TD: I think Callie would be a little nervous around Travis. Not because she’d be afraid of him, but because I think he can be a little intimidating. But if Harper was there, she’d probably make fun of Travis and that would put Callie at ease. Maybe they could double date?

ItBW: What is a book that you wish you had written? Why?

TD: One book that makes me seethe with writerly envy (in a good way) is Brooklyn, Burning by Steve Brezenoff. I love that the main character’s gender is unknown throughout the book and we never get a clue as to whether Kid is a boy or girl. And, in the end, it really doesn’t matter. And that’s kind of the genius of the book.

ItBW: Finish these sentences…

My number one book boyfriend is…Ryan from Raw Blue by Kirsty Eagar
People would be surprised to know…that I live in and write about Florida, but if I could live anywhere in the US, it would not be Florida. (It would be San Francisco.)
We could be best friends if…you like soccer. Especially if your favorite team is Liverpool.
--------------------------------------
Thanks so much to Trish for answering my questions! Also, I have to say that if you haven't read Brooklyn, Burning yet, you should. It's one of the most powerful books I've read.
--------------------------------------
                                      About the Book:

Stolen as a child from her large and loving family, and on the run with her mom for more than ten years, Callie has only the barest idea of what normal life might be like. She's never had a home, never gone to school, and has gotten most of her meals from laundromat vending machines. Her dreams are haunted by memories she’d like to forget completely. But when Callie’s mom is finally arrested for kidnapping her, and Callie’s real dad whisks her back to what would have been her life, in a small town in Florida, Callie must find a way to leave the past behind. She must learn to be part of a family. And she must believe that love--even with someone who seems an improbable choice--is more than just a possibility.
Trish Doller writes incredibly real teens, and this searing story of love, betrayal, and how not to lose your mind will resonate with readers who want their stories gritty and utterly true.
