My Soul to Take - Rachel Vincent

Synopsis: She doesn't see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.
Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next. (From Goodreads)

I often try to look beyond the amazing boys and see other great things in books. But I can't in this case. I. freaking. love. Nash.  For real. Ideal book-boyfriend. I mean, he does show up out of nowhere and he's incredibly perfect through the whole book. He's very open and honest, he's adorable, clear about his intentions and he makes your skin tingle - in a good way, not a creepy way. He was flawless to the point where I was almost skeptical and kept waiting for his skeletons to come storming out of the closet - but I gave that up and let it go so I could just enjoy it. There's plenty more time for him to screw things up I suppose.

Other than the awesome boy - the banshee idea is great - it's all explained very well and I think this book is great set-up for the rest of the series. It's very thorough and packed with information that you'll need to know, but it's never overwhelming. Nash kind of guides Kaylee through her learning process in the midst of some other, bigger things, going down so it's never too much or too little going on.

The other thing that struck me was the family dynamic. This is a colorful family and I'm interested to learn more about them. They kind of step through toward the end of the book and uncover their family secrets, but I'm hoping they'll play bigger roles in the future books. Particularly Kaylee's cousin Sophie - who was annoying through most of the book, but I think she could become a breakthrough character.

I read this book for the Soul Screamers Challenge hosted by Fiktshun - and I'm really excited to continue on in the series, so stay tuned for my reaction to book two - My Soul to Save. (It's really weird predicting things with so many books already out. I have a feeling I'm going to look back on this post in 5 books and laugh at myself.)
